Privacy Policy

We respect your privacy

The FamilyQuest Network website (“Network” or “FamilyQuest”) is owned and operated by Atlantic Cancer Research Institute Inc.. (“ACRI”, “we”, “us” or “our”).

ACRI recognizes that our community members, online visitors and other persons with whom we may interact (“you” or “your”) are concerned about their personal information. This Privacy Policy (“Policy”) outlines how we collect, use, disclose and protect your personal information. Personal information is information about an identifiable individual, as more particularly described under applicable privacy legislation.

This Policy applies to our protection of personal information in Canada. This Policy does not apply to information about our employees or to information that is not personal information.

Collection of Personal Information and Your Consent

Because FamilyQuest is a social networking site, in order to use most features, you will be required to provide personal information. ACRI only collects personal information that you provide to us, either directly, or when using certain features of the Network (such as creating a member profile, updating your member profile, or making a donation or pledge). Personal information we may collect includes:

  • Basic personal information collected during the account creation process includes your name, email address, and postal code; and
  • Additional information required during the checkout process for pledges will also include your address, telephone number, and credit card details.

By providing ACRI with this information you are thereby consenting to the collection, use and disclosure of your personal information in accordance with this Policy.

Use and Disclosure of Personal Information

ACRI collects, retains, and displays personal information for reasonable purposes such as to:

  • Create and store your member profile;
  • Process charitable pledges or donations;
  • Update our website; and
  • Respond to comments & requests.

Certain features of FamilyQuest, by their nature, necessarily involve making certain personal information available to the public. Whenever you voluntarily disclose personal information using features such as online forums, message boards, public profiles and other similar features, this information is being made available to anyone. Such information may be collected and used by third parties for purposes over which ACRI has no control. By making such information available using such features, ACRI has no responsibility for the handling of such information.

ACRI will not sell, trade or loan your information to other organizations. However, your personal information may be transferred to a successor entity of ACRI or to any entity which purchases substantially all or part of the assets of ACRI.

Except as described in this Policy, ACRI will not disclose your personal information to unaffiliated companies unless you have consented to such disclosure.

ACRI sometimes contracts with outside organizations to perform specialized services such as hosting the Network or processing credit card information for pledges or donations. Our suppliers may at times receive, process or handle some of your personal information. Only the personal information necessary to perform the specific services is given to the supplier. Reasonable contractual and other measures will be taken with such suppliers to protect your personal information in accordance with ACRI’s policies, including providing a level of protection for your personal information that is comparable to ours, but may be subject to legal requirements in the country in which the supplier operates, such as lawful requirements to disclose personal information to government authorities in those countries.

ACRI may disclose your personal information when authorized by you or when required or permitted by law.

Retention of Personal Information

When your personal information is no longer required for the purposes stated in this Policy or other statutory requirements, your personal information will be made anonymous or be destroyed unless your further consent is obtained for the retention of your personal information for additional purposes not stated in this Policy.

ACRI may retain some personal data after an account is terminated in order to fulfill certain legal obligations, to provide content to other members, or to maintain the integrity and continuity of our records. For example, a cause page may not be deleted in cases where other users have made pledges to it.

Access, Verify and Amend Personal Information

You have the right to access, verify and amend all your personal information collected by ACRI by contacting us in the manner described below.

Collection, Use and Disclosure of Non-personal Information

ACRI may at times collect non-personal data from visitors such as the type of internet browser used, the internet protocol address, or the user’s preferred language. You cannot be personally identified from this information.

The data is used to assist us in providing a more effective and enjoyable experience for all our visitors, to diagnose problems with the Network, to assess the effectiveness of content and traffic at the Network and to determine how visitors use the Network.

Aggregate non-personal, non-identifiable information may be used to describe our services to third parties. Your personal information will not be disclosed in any of these circumstances; only non-identifiable, non-personal information will be disclosed.

When using our e-mail referral service to inform a friend about FamilyQuest, you will be asked for the friend’s email address. A one-time email will automatically be sent by us to invite them to visit FamilyQuest. ACRI will not automatically add your friend to any mailing list.
